“The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14)

The La-Z-Boy
October 18th, 2009 · No Comments
By Jenny Lou Jones
With the birth of our first child, Lance told me that he’d help me rock our new baby to sleep if only I’d agree to buy a La-Z-Boy. His argument was that all decent and caring fathers had one thing in common—a big, boxy wad of material that calls itself a chair. [...]
Remembering Your Citizenship

“… but our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20)
Since this is the last week of our Thriving in Tough Times series, I’ve been reading over the last ten letters (the whole series) in order to review what we’ve covered and come away [...]

Thriving in Tough Times Part 9
“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.” (Mark 13:8)
I saw on the morning news that we’ll be into hurricane season next week. We live in the Southeast so hurricanes are an [...]

Celebrities and False Prophets: Looking Behind the Curtain
February 20th, 2009 · 3 Comments
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves…. Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:15, 21)
We’re still in the red letters. If [...]

I don’t always believe God is real.
Kind of shocking, isn’t it? But let me present the evidence.
If I believed God was real, I’d believe in what His Son said. I’d take it to heart. I wouldn’t doubt it. I’d have what we ‘believers’ call ‘faith’.
Not believing God is real is more common than you think. [...]

“Would You Condemn Me to Justify Yourself?”
January 13th, 2009 · 1 Comment
“‘Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself.’” (Job 40:8)
I received a sad comment this weekend. It was a response to a Purpose Weekly letter “Has God Forsaken You?” You can read the letter and the comment (feel free to comment yourself) at: http://www.gotpotential.org/gods-purpose/has-god-forsaken-you.
Here’s the comment from John:

“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (Psalm 90:2)
I took advantage of the relative quiet over the last two weeks of holiday to finish pre-press edits for the North American edition of Unlocking the Bible by David Pawson. It’s a massive [...]

“And the Scriptures also say, ‘He is the Stone that some will stumble over and the Rock that will make them fall.’ They will stumble because they will not listen to God’s word, nor obey it, and so this punishment must follow - that they will fall. But you are not like that, for you [...]

Widow’s Mite - A Christmas Story (part 2)
December 16th, 2008 · No Comments
Saturday morning came and Cora Lee’s chickens never entered my mind. Christmas was just three days away and I had a hundred last minute chores still undone. Sunday morning Ray asked the congregation to remember Cora Lee in prayer. She had slipped into a coma on Wednesday night.
When Ray mentioned Cora’s name Elaine and I [...]

“For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” (I Corinthians 1:25)
Purpose Weekly is a success newsletter. I know it doesn’t always appear that way. Sometimes it’s kind of preachy - talking about spiritual stuff more than practical success.
Yeah, I know that sometimes it [...]

The Cost of Being Perfect

John Brown’s Faith
October 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” (Hebrews 11:1-2)

Responding to God

“But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I’ll show you my faith by what I do.” (James 2:18)

Voices Part III, Responding to God’s Voice
October 10th, 2008 · No Comments
But acting on God so He will react isn’t the nature of our relationship with Him as He intends it. It’s not up to us to be proactive with God. He spoke the universe into existence. He knew you and purposed your life before the sun first shed its light on this planet. He knows you and your situation right now; He knows what situation you’ll be in tomorrow. God is the proactive One. He acts on the universe and it responds. He acts on you and for you; it’s up to you to respond.
